RIP Les Lye. When I moved to the United States from South Africa in 1987 into a Howard Johnson in Clark New Jersey, all I had to do was watch television, or walk to Bradlees. What did I do for hours on end? If you guessed watched “PinWheel” you are totally wrong. I watch You Can’t Do That on Television on repeat – and when the slim flowed when someone said “I Don’t Know” I laughed with my silly south african accent. (Which I later learned was not silly).
It is with huge regret that Canadian actor Les Lye, known to most their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s as the multi-talented maniac on ‘You Can’t Do That on Television,’ has died at 84 years of age. According to his CTV obituary, he passed away on Tuesday due to unknown causes, however its been speculated that it was due to cancer.
Thanks Les for making my move to America bearable while I was stuck in a hotel room. I think we all owe you an “I don’t know”, a “water” and a barth burger. My condolences to the family.
A little tidbit from the past.
